Home Education Deregistration Letter
If you want your remove your child from a mainstream school in England, Wales or Northern Ireland then you will need to send a letter of deregistration to the headteacher informing them of your decision to home educate. (In an Special School or in Scotland you must seek permission from the Local Authority).
Feel free to copy and paste the template below.
It is important that you keep evidence that you sent a letter either by posting recorded delivery and/or by emailing the Headteacher.
Example school de-registration letter:
Dear Sir/Madam
Re: (your child’s name & date of birth)
After careful consideration we are withdrawing our son/daughterfrom school in order to home educate in accordance with Section 7 of the 1996 Education Act.
Please remove his/her name from the school register as from date in accordance with the Education (Pupil Registration) Regulation 2005 section 9(1)(c) for mainstream schools (Wales) OR Education (Pupil Registration) Regulation 2016 section 8(1)(d) for mainstream schools (England).
Please confirm in writing that you have received this letter and that my child’s name has been removed from the school register.

- Get proof that you sent the deregistration letter.
- Don’t feel forced to accept meetings with the Headteacher or LA to discuss your decision.
